Pattern-free Insanity

I have always wanted to be one of those people that could drape fabric across a dress form, pin some pleats and end up with a gorgeous dress. In reality, I have never ever been able to sew anything without a pattern. So, my goal this weekend was to complete a project without the aid of a pattern.

At first, I tried to make bloomers for Miss B. Disaster. I measured, cut and found that I had cut them too narrow and they barely went on her. This is before I put in the elastic. Did I mention that math is not my strong suit? Strike 1.

I tried the bloomers again. This time I made them plenty big enough to not only go around her, but be beautifully gathered. I got the elastic in very nicely. However, when I tried them on her I noticed that I had made the rise approximately as long as a very nice pair of hootchie jeans. Miss B's comment was, "yipe." Strike 2.

Last night was my last chance. It was 10:30 on Sunday and the weekend was very nearly over. I sat down on the floor (one day, a cutting table!!!) with some very pretty fabric figuring that if I cared about the fabric maybe I would measure twice and cut correctly. And, it worked! I made this sweet soft bag for Miss B to carry her various things about. It may not be the impressive draped dress of my dreams but it is Mission Accomplished!
